KIPP Philadelphia Elementary’s first class of kindergarten students made remarkable academic progress in only one year. Even though many students started the year with limited literacy and math skills, 95% of students were reading on or above grade level by the end of kindergarten. 93% of students were achieving on a 1st grade math level, including adding and subtracting!
The results are equally impressive on developmentally appropriate standardized tests. According to the nationally known MAP assessment, students improved from the 14th percentile in math at the start of the year to the 58th percentile in June. In reading, students moved from the 30th percentile to the 71st by the end of the year.
